With feigned naivety and tangible irony, Gerd Dengler takes a look at art history and, through it, at (good) middle-class existence. His easily accessible pictures are by no means as harmless as they appear at first glance. He skillfully unfolds an exciting puzzle between image, likeness and reality in his cool-looking works.
The exhibition at Forum Würth Chur is dominated by his works, which unmistakably refer to important masters of painting such as Velazquez or Van Gogh. Each art quotation is accompanied by its reinterpretation. By recognizing many things, he touches our sublime memory, only to immediately transfer us into an ambivalent feeling between kitsch and triviality.
